Van Dyke House
Inference leads us to believe that when grain merchant Van Dyke bought these lots along the cart road in 1862 from Jacob Naudain, the tenements had been standing for a decade. Nails and pointless screws, and framing details in the finished attic of the original 5 bay house indicate the late Federal/Greek revival dwelling was built about 1840. Recent renovations show that the kitchen was probably built about 1800 and was the original structure. Deeds reveal the properties were twice sold at sheriff's sale and that 3 doctors practiced here. Pocket doors open to the former waiting room and an entrance to the drug store, which was attached to the west side of the house, is still evident.
The converted stable on the property could be one of oldest still standing in DE. Nails found in the stable and a signed board dated from the 1700's indicate that the stable was built in the late 18th century. The stable is said to have been moved to its current location but no records exist on the stable's history.
